This place is amazing . Beef that was feed on apples is so unique. The atmosphere is also very cool . People are friendly of course as this is Nozawa where everyone is friendly. I am a fussy eater but this place caters to your every wish .. Thanks for a unique experience. 👍😁

Something a little different than the usual ramen, katsu and sushi that is available everywhere else. Great food, service and overall experience. The beef is amazing!

After waiting three days for a spot, I had high hopes for Tanuki's. The setting is great and has so much potential but the skill of the chef left a lot to be desired. The food was ok but didn't match the price tag by any stretch. They have zero flexibility on the menu, even with days of notice, which was disappointing. Not a place I would recommend I'm afraid.

Quite simply the best steak I've ever eaten. Really enjoyed the tepan experience with the chef. Atmosphere was fantastic, kids loved the experience and wine list was superb. Highly recommended.

After a day of Nozawa goodness this place is a must during your eats list while in Nozawa- super casual seating & vibe surrounding the chef on duty - every course is made right in front of you - you almost want to grab a bit off the skillet your're so close (dont worry I didn't). Its not the cheapest option in town, nor should it be - apple fed beef, Nagano Merlot (amazing) even the rice is delicious!!?? - I always make it my 'last harrah' on my yearly trip to Nozawa - I seem to mingle with some great characters who are also in the know about Tanuki - Great place to finish on a high note. If you stay in Nozawa don't miss Tanuki Teppanyaki. Great atmosphere, excellent for big groups, fantastic wine and sake and the food is amazing. Then there is a super cool downstairs bar with great live music every night.

Small and intimate experience.Apple fed beef is a highlight.. Must book in advance as was hard to get in.

Tanuki is a must try whilst in Nozawa. The food is exceptional, the apple fed Wagyu is next level delicious. The chef explains each course which differed from anything I'd tried before so a unique dining experience. The location is great too, right in the heart of town overlooking the main street with a lovely atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

Apple fed beef was amazing, overall a great experience for the family with the awesome setting & outlook over the heart of the old village. The Friendly Tanuki staff topped off a great night. Highly recommend.

A special dining experience in Nozawa - highly recommended!

We had a really great meal here. The whole family enjoyed the experience and all of the courses were delicious. Stand out dish was the beef. Highly recommended!

Great quality dinner at Nozawa Onsen!Flesh veg from the local farms.Had a great time with my family and friends.I really love the beef chef made!Also wine pairing was great!!!Nozawa was lots of local restaurants, but one thing lacking was something entertaining and quality meal!

If you want to eat quality local Japanese food... but in an Australian-owned building, surrounded by Australian guests, and served by an Australian chef, and pay the usual high Australian price, then eat here. It was nice but felt like any high-end teppanyaki back home - only with well-sourced local ingredients. Don't get me wrong, it was very nice, and the chef was friendly and explained each course in detail. I was just expecting a more "local" experience. It wasn't that kind of traditional place, very modern and very, well... Australian. 5 stars if you're ok with that, 3 stars if you're looking for a very traditional Japanese teppanyaki cultural experience.

One of the best teppanyaki experiences that i have had on my life! If you truly want to experience a taste sensation have the apple fed wagyu..its unbelievable. I also enjoyed the natural wasabi and grinding it down to add to your dish, a totally new experience for me. Everything was amazing...food, service. I will back...really soon!!!

Set right in the heart of town, easy to get to, great service and top food. Must try the Apple fed Wagyu Beef!!!!

Seems to be targeting a mix of fine-dining experience with teppanyaki, without any of the (admittedly American origin) flair of cooking in front of you on a hot plate. There are many other places in town that would offer much better value for money, and other places that might offer a similar 'western fine dining' experience. The food itself was fine and service great as all other Japanese restaurants are. Hard to recommend in comparison to the other options available in town.
